Travis Kalanick’s robotics company, Atoms, recently secured a significant $1.7 billion funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz. Although details on Kalanick’s exact vision for the company were initially sparse, a Financial Times report now reveals that Atoms is poised for a hiring expansion and is considering acquisitions to establish a strong presence in the autonomous vehicle market.
The report indicates that Atoms has engaged in discussions with Uber about utilizing its robotaxi technology, and notably, Uber has invested $100 million in Atoms. While robotaxis are a key focus, the scope of Atoms’ ambitions extends beyond this alone, echoing Kalanick’s comment on the funding round being about “unfinished business.”
Additionally, Atoms recently acquired Pronto, an autonomous mining startup, led by former Uber self-driving chief Anthony Levandowski, who has a controversial past involving a conviction for stealing trade secrets but was later pardoned. This acquisition further underscores Atoms’ strategic direction in the autonomous vehicle industry.
