Isar Aerospace successfully launched its 28-meter-long Spectrum rocket from the Andøya spaceport in Arctic Norway, marking a significant milestone for European space efforts. The rocket, launched at 10:12 PM (20:12 GMT) on Saturday, carried and successfully deployed five satellites into orbit within minutes of reaching an altitude of 100 km (62 miles).
This launch is notable as it’s the first privately developed rocket to reach space from Europe, highlighting Europe’s intention to enhance its independent satellite launch capabilities amid concerns over reliance on external partners like SpaceX. Isar Aerospace aims to manufacture up to 40 launch vehicles annually, having secured $230 million from the European Space Agency (ESA) to further develop its launch infrastructure as part of the European Launcher Challenge.
Following setbacks in earlier attempts and increased interest in small commercial launchers, this launch signifies hope for Europe’s future in space technology and competition in the aerospace sector.
