The Bay City Arts Center (BCAC) recently hosted a week-long youth summer camp, “Create, Perform, & Imagine Week,” from June 15-19, which brought together 35 students from various parts of Tillamook County. The camp offered diverse activities, including drawing, painting, performance arts, juggling, improv, and sound design, providing a unique creative experience likened to gathering in a welcoming backyard.
BCAC Executive Director Lauren Sorg emphasized the opportunities the camp provided for children to explore visual arts, performing arts, and music. Financial support from the Tillamook Family Counseling Center and a grant from the Tillamook County Cultural Coalition (TCCC) enabled the camp to be free for participants and funded four art instructor positions, promoting both artistic development and economic growth in the community.
At the camp’s conclusion, students showcased their talents by writing and performing original songs for an audience of friends and family. Sorg recognized this as a powerful demonstration of children’s capabilities for unique expression.
In addition to the camp, TCCC has distributed nearly $25,000 this season to local projects aligning with its mission to enhance education, community arts, heritage, environment, and traditions. They are currently seeking new board members passionate about promoting Tillamook County’s cultural awareness. Interested individuals can find application details at tcpm.org.
