Holiday Travel Costs Rise According to AAA
RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – This year’s holiday travel is seeing increased costs, with AAA reporting that airfare to popular destinations is approximately 20% higher than last year. In addition, Virginia gas prices have hit a Labor Day record.
Flight and Fuel Prices Increase
AAA’s Morgan Dean notes that while overall airline bookings have risen by two percent compared to last year, ticket prices for key destinations like New York, Boston, and Orlando have spiked dramatically. He attributes part of this increase to earlier bookings made before recent hikes in jet fuel prices. Dean highlights a broader trend affecting both airline tickets and gas prices, pointing to instability in the Middle East and uncertainties in the global oil market.
New data from AAA reveals a 9% increase in hotel bookings compared to last year, and domestic tour bookings are up by 12%. Conversely, rental car bookings have decreased by 8%, and cruise bookings are down by 4%. The rise in hotel prices can be linked to greater demand and higher operational costs, which are eventually passed on to travelers.
Virginia’s current gas price stands around $3.95, marking a 96-cent increase from the previous year and the highest for Labor Day since AAA began tracking prices. The previous record was $3.69 in 2012, while 2022 prices were $3.58 due to the impact of geopolitical events like Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Personal Impact of Rising Costs
Local resident Sweive Whitaker shared how high fuel prices are affecting his travel plans: “At $6 for diesel, it’s outrageous. Filling up my Suburban now costs about $120.” He has opted for family gatherings instead of traveling this holiday weekend, indicating the financial burden has altered his typical plans.
Driving Factors Behind Price Increases
The ongoing conflict in Iran is contributing to rising crude oil prices, which influences both flight and gas costs. Dean notes that crude oil prices recently soared from around $82 to $92 per barrel, with crude oil accounting for about 50% of the cost at the pump. Reduced shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil, further exacerbates the situation.
Dean also indicates that while gas prices this Labor Day are lower than those during Memorial Day, they remain higher than prices seen during the Fourth of July. He recommends early booking to secure better rates: “If you find the trip and the airline tickets you want, lock it in now. Prices may drop but can also fill up quickly.”
Looking ahead, AAA is witnessing increasing bookings for Thanksgiving and year-end holiday trips.
