The new hourly limit for Xbox Cloud Gaming is reportedly aligned with the point where Microsoft ceases to profit.

The recent report indicates that Xbox has imposed a cap on cloud gaming usage for Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, limiting it to 15 hours a month. This decision is based on profitability concerns, as extending usage beyond this limit reportedly incurs losses for Microsoft.

For all tiers of Xbox Game Pass subscriptions, the new streaming time limits are as follows:

  • Game Pass Essential: 5 hours/month
  • Game Pass Premium: 10 hours/month
  • Game Pass Ultimate: 15 hours/month

According to sources cited by Windows Central, this cap is not arbitrary but aligns with Microsoft’s break-even point, particularly due to escalating costs associated with server memory usage as a result of investments in AI. This shift in server priorities has led to a broader trend of cost-cutting within Xbox, including layoffs and project cancellations.

Despite these limitations, industry leaders remain optimistic about cloud gaming’s future. Take-Two’s CEO predicts that widespread game streaming could become commonplace in just three years, while Xbox has begun testing ad-supported game streaming options. The current hardware crisis, with rising costs for consoles and gaming PCs, may further push consumers toward streaming solutions, even with their existing challenges.
