Xbox is set to implement monthly playtime restrictions for cloud gaming, capping it at 15 hours.

Microsoft is set to implement new playtime caps for Xbox Game Pass subscribers starting in November 2026, ending the era of unlimited cloud gaming. The hours allowed will vary by subscription tier: Ultimate users will get 15 hours, Premium users will have 10 hours, and Essential users will only have 5 hours.

While Microsoft claims this change will impact only 4% of subscribers, it still feels restrictive compared to competitors like Nvidia’s GeForce Now, which offers 100 hours of streaming with no game access. Subscribers wanting additional playtime can purchase it through the Xbox Store, though costs have yet to be revealed.

Microsoft cites rising cloud service costs as the reason for this adjustment, likely influenced by ongoing tech shortages. Additionally, Xbox will introduce a standalone cloud gaming purchase option for users without Game Pass, aimed at those who occasionally wish to stream without committing to a subscription.

There are questions about how these changes will interact with the ad-supported tier of Xbox Cloud Gaming, which requires users to watch ads before gameplay. It’s suggested that paid members might seamlessly switch to the ad tier after hitting their limits.

Overall, this shift is likely to be unpopular, especially given the existing costs of Game Pass subscriptions, which range from £6.99/$9.99 for the Essential tier to £16.99/$22.99 for Ultimate.
