Brown University Launches Aging Research Initiative with $37 Million Investment
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Brown University, alongside Brown University Health, has announced a groundbreaking initiative aimed at advancing research and treatments in aging, fueled by a significant $37 million investment from the Starr Foundation.
The Starr Healthspan Innovation Alliance will fuse university research with Brown’s clinical trial network, targeting innovative solutions for major age-related diseases. This partnership is set to enhance the Center on the Biology of Aging, supporting pioneering laboratory research and attracting leading scientists in geroscience—the study of aging’s genetic and cellular mechanisms.
“This generous investment empowers us to realize our vision for a future where individuals can lead healthier, more fulfilling lives as they age,” stated Christina H. Paxson, President of Brown University. The alliance aims to turn cutting-edge research into impactful treatments for serious conditions such as cancer and dementia.
Building on an established collaborative structure between Brown’s Warren Alpert Medical School and local teaching hospitals, the initiative enhances the integration of academic research with clinical practice. This follows the creation of an operational enterprise in 2022 that unified research efforts and strengthens their ongoing partnership, aiming to improve patient care and biomedical research in Rhode Island.
