Ford is stepping into defense contracting as a legitimate business avenue, collaborating with General Dynamics Land Systems UK and Ricardo to propose modified Ranger pick-ups for the UK’s Ministry of Defence. This move comes amid stiff competition, with major players like General Motors, INEOS Automotive, and Jaguar Land Rover also vying for military contracts.
Ford’s foray into the UK follows its bid for a separate US Army contract to develop military prototypes of its F-Series Super Duty pickup. However, Ford is lagging behind GM, which has an established defense division and significant revenue expectations for upcoming contracts. Ford’s plans lack the same level of organization, as it has no dedicated defense subsidiary or clear revenue goals.
The automaker’s military ambitions are complicated by new U.S. regulations restricting sourcing materials from adversarial nations, which could hinder its efforts. While defense contracting is becoming a viable option for automakers with idle capacity, Ford’s slower, less defined approach highlights the disparity in how companies are adapting to this emerging market.
