City and state leaders are actively working to preserve the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, which is set to close after nearly 200 years. David Cohen, a lawyer and former U.S. ambassador, has joined the effort at the request of Governor Josh Shapiro. He emphasizes the importance of maintaining the academy’s missions in research, education, and public engagement despite potential changes.
Cohen is focused on negotiating an agreement with Drexel University to sustain the academy’s operations, although the museum will vacate its current building on Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Despite financial difficulties due to declining attendance, Cohen is optimistic that the academy’s mission will continue, albeit in a different format. He notes that interest in relocating exists, but staying in Philadelphia is crucial, as the institution is a significant part of the city’s cultural identity.
Philadelphia Deputy Mayor Patricia “Trish” Wellenbach will also assist as a senior adviser during this transition. The museum is scheduled to close on September 30, after which the process of relocating its vast collection of artifacts will begin.
