The University of Missouri is set to enhance its status as a leader in energy innovation thanks to a substantial $50 million donation from David Payne, an alumnus and chair of PayneCrest Electric. This significant investment is the largest single contribution to a school or college in the university’s history and will support various academic programs, research advancements, and notable renovations, including rebranding the electrical engineering department to honor Payne.
With this funding, the university has inaugurated the construction of the Payne Energy Innovation Center, a 116,000-square-foot facility aimed at addressing critical challenges in energy production, storage, security, and delivery. The center will focus on high-impact areas such as advanced energy materials and cybersecurity, and it aims to foster interdisciplinary collaborations among experts from various fields.
The initiative reflects the urgency to meet growing energy demands, projected to double in the next 25 years, especially with the rise of artificial intelligence. The facility is expected to contribute significantly to Mizzou’s broader Power the Roar campaign, which seeks to raise $2 billion for various projects and ultimately strengthen communities and develop future leaders.
The Payne Energy Innovation Center is projected to open in Fall 2028, promising to combine engineering, arts, agriculture, law, business, and journalism expertise to create practical energy solutions that will benefit Missouri and beyond.
