Court mandates modifications to Google’s advertising operations but avoids forcing a split – WTOP News

A federal judge has ruled that Google must reform its digital advertising system but will not be forced to break up the company, sparing it from a significant overhaul proposed by the U.S. government. U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema’s decision marks a second reprieve for Google in recent antitrust actions, allowing the company to continue its advertising practices while perhaps implementing some changes that could affect its revenue and growth.

Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc., has a market value of approximately $4.11 trillion. The judge’s full decision is under seal for two weeks for review and potential redactions. Critics of Big Tech have expressed disappointment, arguing that the ruling signals a lack of serious consequences for anti-competitive behavior.

In past cases, the government sought harsher penalties, including a requirement for Google to divest components like its Chrome web browser due to its established monopoly status. Google argues that dismantling its complex advertising technology could harm small businesses and disrupt critical infrastructure used by millions of consumers.
