Arizona State University (ASU) is collaborating with Philip Morris International (PMI) U.S. on a national initiative called the Community Futures Challenge, aimed at funding innovative, community-driven solutions to various challenges across the country. This program will provide five grants of $50,000 each to nonprofit organizations that develop practical ideas to strengthen their communities.
ASU will play a significant role in administering the competition and the judging process, leveraging its expertise in innovation and entrepreneurship, which will engage organizations from all 50 states. According to Dr. Sethuraman “Panch” Panchanathan, who is heading the judging panel, the initiative emphasizes the importance of rooted innovation that reflects community needs.
The Challenge is open to eligible U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofits focusing on projects for adults aged 21 and older, including early-stage, pilot, or scaling projects. Additionally, the initiative will feature a four-city “innovation hub” tour, including Phoenix, to showcase local problem-solvers and connect civic leaders.
PMI U.S. CEO Stacey Kennedy highlighted the company’s ongoing commitment to American jobs and innovation, reinforcing that meaningful innovation often stems from those closest to community challenges. A recent survey indicated broad consensus among Americans on the importance of community-driven solutions and partnerships.
Involved in the judging will be a diverse panel, including prominent individuals from various sectors, ensuring a well-rounded selection process.
