George Lucas Reflects on the Challenge of Launching the Lucas Museum: “This Nearly Tested My Resolve”

Lucas Museum of Narrative Art: A Dream Realized

George Lucas and Mellody Hobson introduced their ambitious $1 billion museum to the press, emphasizing both the essence of narrative storytelling and their long journey to bring this dream to life.

Lucas recounted the challenges he faced over 17 years, including bureaucratic hurdles that almost shattered his resilience. He openly described himself as a contrarian, someone motivated by achieving the impossible despite naysayers.

The museum’s focus on narrative art—a concept that has sparked debate about its meaning—aims to evoke emotional connections through art. After exploring locations in Chicago and San Francisco, they settled in Exposition Park, transforming former parking lots into a striking, spaceship-like structure designed by architect Ma Yansong.

The museum, set to open on September 22, spans 300,000 square feet with 100,000 dedicated to galleries. Its themes include adventure, motherhood, and community, and it features exhibitions by renowned artists like Norman Rockwell and Maxfield Parrish. The 11-acre campus also includes public spaces, an amphitheater, and a restaurant offering spectacular views of downtown L.A.

Hobson emphasized the museum’s mission: to honor illustrators and make art accessible. “This is a museum by the people, for the people,” she stated, reinforcing their commitment to celebrating the narratives that shape our culture.
