More Than Just Drinking: Experts Suggest Ways to Hydrate Through Food in Tennessee’s Heat

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — September is heating up in Tennessee, with temperatures soaring above average, prompting experts to emphasize the importance of hydration for athletes. Sports dietitian Wendi Irlbeck advises drinking 16-24 ounces of water every couple of hours to combat morning dehydration.

Beyond water, Irlbeck highlights the benefits of hydrating foods like salted watermelon and orange slices, which provide essential fluids, carbohydrates, and minerals—key components for optimal performance. She emphasizes the significant loss of sodium, magnesium, and potassium through sweat, suggesting that hydration plans should account for these nutrients.

For those monitoring weight during exercise, it’s recommended to drink 16-24 ounces of water for each pound lost, along with 500mg of sodium. Irlbeck also raises concerns about caffeine, recommending student-athletes limit intake to no more than 100mg per day due to its dehydrating effects.

Stay informed and hydrated as the heat continues!
