Overview

On August 31, 2026, Samba reentered Earth’s atmosphere as part of its final mission phase of the four Cluster satellites. This meticulous operation aimed for a targeted reentry over the South Pacific, which was successfully documented by a scientific team.

Targeted Reentry and Observations

Samba’s trajectory was adjusted by mission control in November 2024 to facilitate a safe reentry. Further adjustments in January 2026 enabled a scientific flight to observe its reentry. Observational data from telescopes and the spacecraft provided critical insights about the timing and location of the reentry, which proved accurate down to the second.

Data Collection and Analysis

The airborne team utilized a tracking camera to capture Samba’s reentry with precision. This data will help analyze the fragmentation process and improve understanding of material survivability during reentry. The team has to process data from 29 instruments onboard, prioritizing crucial analyses before the next satellite, Tango, reenters.

Importance of Reentry Science

Improving satellite designs for complete incineration upon reentry reduces atmospheric pollution. As highlighted by ESA’s Stijn Lemmens, the data obtained from Samba’s reentry enriches ongoing research, allowing engineers to develop more effective “design-for-demise” satellites.

Farewell to Samba

The final moments of the Cluster mission were bittersweet. The flight control team at ESA’s ESOC said their farewells as they prepared to send last commands to Samba and later receive telemetry data. The emotional atmosphere reflected the significant contributions and shared memories of the mission.

Looking Ahead: Tango’s Reentry

Today marks Tango’s reentry, predicted for September 1, 2026, 21:30:31 UTC. Live updates are available on ESA’s blog, following the culmination of the Cluster mission.
