FIFA has stirred controversy by announcing plans to invite private investments into its commercial division, specifically for broadcasting and advertising for the World Cup. UEFA has opposed this move, criticizing FIFA for using football to benefit itself and its associates.
FIFA claims the initiative, part of its Fast-Forward Programme (FFFP), aims to increase football development funding to over $10 billion, promising $20 million per Member Association (MA) for special projects and additional funding for future years. They assert that this plan will democratize football by allowing each MA greater control over their funding and decisions.
The initiative involves the establishment of FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), which will manage FIFA’s commercial operations, while FIFA will maintain governance over football’s core functions. FIFA is targeting to raise up to $4.2 billion this year through minority investments in the FFE, which could impact the commercial rights for events ranging from the World Cup to youth tournaments.
UEFA reiterated its stance against the commercialization of football, declaring, “football is not for sale.”
