UNPA to Conclude in 2026 Following Israelsen’s Retirement

The United Natural Products Alliance (UNPA), founded in 1992, played a pivotal role in shaping the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA), which helped the dietary supplement industry expand globally. According to UNPA’s founding member and leader, Israelsen, the organization started with a singular mission to help the industry amid federal scrutiny. Initially comprised of eight competing companies, UNPA’s founding members prioritized collaboration over competition to address urgent industry challenges.

In 2005, the organization rebranded from the Utah Natural Products Alliance to reflect its broader membership across North America, Europe, and Asia, encompassing manufacturers, ingredient suppliers, and service providers. Israelsen emphasized that UNPA operates on a consensus-based model, ensuring equal input from all members, which distinguishes it from other associations.

Looking ahead, Israelsen noted that UNPA still has critical tasks, such as addressing the FDA’s exclusionary rule and resolving certain issues related to New Dietary Ingredients (NDIs). As the dietary supplement landscape changes, he intends to shift focus toward personal projects after years of leadership, confident that the industry is in capable hands.

Israelsen’s contributions have earned him numerous accolades, including the NutraChampion award in 2021 and an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Sonoran University of Health Sciences. His reflections suggest a readiness for new challenges as the industry matures. The article also hints at an upcoming interview covering topics like AI in the industry and significant influences on his career.
