“There is undoubtedly a renaissance happening,” asserts Tim McGreevy, CEO of USA Pulses, the trade group representing the pulse crop industry, which includes beans, lentils, chickpeas, and more. “Beans can improve your well-being, and that’s their true power.”

Beans, particularly Phaseolus vulgaris, have a long history, having been pivotal in early agriculture. As a more economical alternative to animal proteins, legumes have transcended cultures. From dal in South Asia to beans-and-rice dishes prevalent throughout Latin America, beans are an integral part of numerous culinary traditions.

According to McGreevy, “We missed out on the powers beans hold. It’s clear they offer significant health benefits.” For many, beans are becoming more than merely a cheap source of protein, especially as the cost of food continues to rise.

Sando, an heirloom bean purveyor, remarks, “People are beginning to appreciate that beans are delicious and worth celebrating.” Founded in 2001, Rancho Gordo has become a beacon for legume fans, being known for its high-quality beans. Today, the company sells approximately 2.5 million pounds annually.

The Rancho Gordo Bean Club allows enthusiasts to regularly sample unique offerings, connecting them to the joy of cooking and sharing beans. Community events that focus on beans are becoming popular, underlining the social aspect of food. For many, discovering the delicious versatility of beans has become a journey in itself.

Beans as a Lifestyle

A passionate advocate for beans, Madeline Schapiro, shares her journey of incorporating beans into her diet. “Beans changed my life,” she states, highlighting their positive impact on her health. Now a popular online figure known as the ‘Bean Supporter,’ she shares her love for legumes with a wide audience.
