Ebola Outbreak in Congo and Uganda Declared International Emergency

The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda as a “public health emergency of international concern.” This alarming situation has led health agencies to ramp up their response efforts to prevent further spread.

Current Situation

On Sunday, the WHO reported that the outbreak, attributed to the Bundibugyo virus, does not qualify as a pandemic emergency. As of Saturday, there have been 80 suspected deaths, eight confirmed cases in laboratories, and 246 suspected cases primarily in DRC’s Ituri province, covering three health zones: Bunia, Rwampara, and Mongbwalu.

The DRC health ministry confirmed on Friday that the new outbreak had led to 80 deaths within the region.

In Uganda’s capital, Kampala, two laboratory-confirmed cases were reported on Friday and Saturday, including one fatality, both linked to individuals who traveled from the DRC. A similar case was also confirmed in Kinshasa, the capital of DRC, involving someone returning from Ituri.

Amidst the outbreak, the Africa CDC has issued warnings regarding “active community transmission,” prompting health workers to intensify screening and contact tracing efforts.

Local residents in Ituri’s capital, Bunia, have voiced their concerns, expressing fear as they witness a rising number of fatalities. One resident, Jean Marc Asimwe, shared, “Every day, people are dying … and this has been going on for about a week. In a single day, we bury two, three or even more people.”

Ebola is known for its high contagiousness, primarily transmitted through bodily fluids. While the disease is rare, it poses severe health risks and can often be fatal.

The latest outbreak was officially announced on Friday and currently reports 65 deaths and 246 suspected cases.

During an online briefing on Saturday, Dr. Jean Kaseya, director-general of the Africa CDC, highlighted that the first cases emerged in the Mongwalu health zone, which is known for its high traffic due to mining activities. He noted, “Cases subsequently migrated to Rwampara and Bunia as patients sought medical care, enabling spread across three health zones.”

Considering the number of active cases in the community, particularly in Mongwalu, Kaseya stated that the situation complicates efforts for containment and contact tracing.

Moreover, ongoing violence in Ituri from Islamic State-linked militants continues to hinder surveillance and rapid response operations.

While Congo has prior experience managing Ebola outbreaks, the logistics of delivering needed resources and expertise to affected areas remain challenging.

As Africa’s second-largest country, Congo faces geographical hurdles with provinces widely separated and many regions embroiled in conflict. Notably, Ituri is approximately 1,000km (620 miles) from Kinshasa, the country’s capital, and suffers from persistent violence attributed to Islamic State-backed militants.
