New Restaurant Tackles Healthy Food Access in East Macon

In a neighborhood long deemed a food desert, two women from East Macon are on a mission to create a vibrant culinary hub by opening a restaurant that emphasizes fresh food and community engagement.

MACON, Ga. — Two local women from East Macon are excited to introduce a new restaurant aimed at providing fresh food, fostering community connections, and stimulating economic development in an area historically recognized as a food desert.

The East Side Cafe, which is set to launch in June on Shurling Drive, is initiated by Towanda Diadill and Shawntae Brown. Both have lived in East Macon all their lives and have observed the scarcity of healthy dining and sit-down restaurant options in their neighborhood over the years.

Federal statistics classify East Macon as a food desert, indicating that many community members reside far from supermarkets or venues that provide fresh produce and nutritious food choices. Although fast-food restaurants are present, there is a noticeable absence of locally-owned sit-down dining establishments.

Diadill describes the inspiration behind the cafe as stemming from her direct experiences with these issues.

“Having a more meaningful purpose—to assist East Macon,” Diadill stated. “I’ve watched restaurants come and go in this community. The food scarcity here is real.”

Diadill, who has lifelong ties to East Macon, will take charge of the culinary aspects, while Brown will oversee the business operations.

Brown expressed her immediate belief in Diadill’s vision for the cafe.

“East Macon certainly needs a quality place to eat,” Brown remarked. “When there’s no one to prepare that Sunday dinner, Mrs. Wanda can fill that void.”

Community members have voiced a clear need for more health-focused and communal dining options.

Y/O Latimore, a resident of East Macon, noted the ongoing limitations regarding access to grocery stores and fresh produce.

“We lack healthy options, like a Panera, on the East Side,” said Latimore.

Latimore also highlighted that the restaurant could tackle broader community concerns like neighborhood decay and the absence of social gathering spaces.

“Food has always been a means for us to come together, regardless of our differences,” Latimore asserted.

The owners have plans for their inaugural public event, which will feature a Mother’s Day-themed soft opening, offering menu tastings and community activities.

“Come experience a sampling of what the East Side Cafe will serve throughout the week,” Diadill added. “It’s also a chance to gather and share joyful moments.”
