Revitalizing Create Space: A Community in Color

The South Whidbey Community Center’s dull gray facade has been transformed into a vibrant expression of creativity, thanks to the collaborative efforts of local artist Melissa Koch and Create Space co-founders Peggy Taylor and Jackie Amatucci. Recognizing the need for a more inviting exterior to reflect the artful spirit inside, Koch’s mural project was commissioned after a serendipitous conversation about improving the building’s appearance.
Koch, who teaches classes at Create Space, conceptualized a mural that not only beautifies the space but also highlights local marine and shoreline life, using her signature silhouette style set against a backdrop of vivid colors. This mural will help guide visitors, making the center easier to locate and creating a warm, welcoming environment.
Taylor noted that the Create Space website was similarly in need of an update, prompting an additional collaboration with Koch’s daughter, Alice Springs, who is redesigning the site. Their collective vision emphasizes themes of creative expression and community bonding, values integral to the mission of Create Space, which fosters artistic connection and collaboration.
As the mural comes to life, local talents like recent high school graduate Alicia Jenkins join the effort, showcasing the area’s rich artistic landscape. With a shared history of collaboration, Koch and Springs continue a tradition of working together on artistic projects.
The foundation of Create Space itself—born out of the desire to combat isolation and foster community through art—further underscores the importance of these initiatives. From its inception to its future, Create Space aspires to inspire other communities to embrace the healing power of creativity.
With the mural project expected to be completed by the end of August, visitors to Create Space at 723 Camano Ave. in Langley will soon find a colorful, inviting landmark that embodies local artistry and community spirit.
