On Memorial Day 2026, a devastating car accident changed the lives of a couple. The husband was medically cleared shortly after, but his wife was airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with critical injuries, including extensive lacerations and a broken pelvis.
The first 36 hours were filled with anxiety and uncertainty, exacerbated by the wife’s medical conditions, such as celiac disease and alpha-gal syndrome. Just when the family felt overwhelmed, they met Carsen in the Trauma ICU.
From the moment she stepped into their room, Carsen treated them not as just another case but as individuals who mattered. Her attentive listening and collaborative approach fostered trust and hope. More than just a skilled nurse, Carsen brought humor and compassion to each interaction, making a difficult situation feel more manageable.
Through personal conversations, they learned about Carsen’s background and passions, which bridged a connection that reminded them of normalcy amidst their turmoil.

The DAISY Award honors exceptional nurses who exemplify compassion and care. Established in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who passed away from a rare autoimmune disease, the award aims to recognize the extraordinary contributions of nurses in the healthcare field.
