Recent insights from YouGov delve into the perspectives of the UK’s smaller businesses regarding the potential integration of LLMs and other AI tools in place of their current software solutions.
Supporters of AI, alongside industry commentators and policymakers, have been vocal about the advantages LLMs can offer to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK. For instance, in January, the government initiated a free AI training program specifically designed to foster greater adoption among small businesses, aiming to enhance proficiency across the country.
However, how do small businesses perceive this technology when compared to their existing software solutions? According to recent data from YouGov Surveys: Serviced, a mere 5% of SME decision-makers report extensive use of LLM technology, while 29% utilize it in a more limited capacity. Additionally, 20% are considering its implementation, whereas more than two-fifths (44%) have not engaged with it at all. Looking ahead, more than half of SME decision-makers (54%) are skeptical that AI will supplant traditional software platforms within the next three years, in contrast to only 30% who believe it will.
In conclusion, while the movement towards AI integration is gaining traction, many smaller businesses remain cautious about fully embracing this technology. The current sentiment reflects a blend of curiosity and skepticism, suggesting that significant time and education are needed to foster wider acceptance.
