Designed to enhance the offerings of Thrive, the Performance Unit specializes in class-based functional fitness, HYROX-style training, group personal training, and individualized coaching. Joel Cooper, the Performance Unit’s owner and Thrive’s facility manager, identified a unique opportunity to fill a gap in existing fitness options. “The Performance Unit first came about in November 2024,” Joel remarked.

“I had been leading smaller classes at Thrive, but I realized there was room for something larger and more dynamic.” The Performance Unit operates in a space that was previously an unused boxing gym.

“When Thrive came under new ownership, we seized the chance to create something distinctive,” Joel explained. “We built the space from the ground up, handling everything from flooring to painting, and exclusively opened it to our members initially.”

Before long, the classes expanded rapidly, increasing from three to 19 sessions per week. Joel attributes this success to the unique training approach. “In hybrid training, we focus on a balanced methodology,” he explained.

“By the end of each session, people are sweating and fully engaged, yet injuries are uncommon. It’s about striking the right balance—enough activity without overexertion.”

Hybrid training merges strength, cardio, and functional movements into one comprehensive workout strategy. “Many find this approach refreshing compared to traditional training,” Joel added. “It’s an hour dedicated to fitness where participants can unwind from daily stressors before heading home.”

“Each session varies and emphasizes teamwork, creating a unique and energetic environment,” he detailed.

Jay McDonald, 33, contributes by coaching classes at the Performance Unit while also providing personal training at the main gym. “My Monday class focuses on partner exercises and is designed to be welcoming,” Jay noted.

“On Fridays, we emphasize teamwork and introduce a friendly element of competition. Everyone supports each other, creating a community atmosphere that fosters accountability.”

“Even as a coach, I actively participate alongside my clients, ensuring I’m engaged in the experience just as they are.”
