Independence Day Celebration | Economic Prism

At the heart of the American identity lies an unwavering commitment to independence, an adventurous spirit, and boundless personal freedoms. While folklore insists these traits endure, we hold some reservations.

In 2014, the principles that ignited America’s War of Independence seem more like distant ideals than realities. The values of limited government and individual liberty have largely been sacrificed on the altar of an expanding bureaucracy, and personal freedoms have dwindled in favor of safety nets and collective policies.

Do you recall a time when you could navigate the web without the NSA scrutinizing your every interaction? Perhaps there was a fleeting moment towards the end of the last century, but that clarity now feels obscured.

It’s clear that the days of earning a living without triggering a federal audit from the IRS are well behind us. Similarly, the experience of boarding an airplane without intrusive screenings from the TSA is long gone. Much has been lost in this transition.

Over the past century, Washington has morphed into a fiscal black hole. At the Capitol Building, legislators and a legion of staffers are deeply engaged in drafting new laws to siphon your hard-earned money. Each day, new regulations and notices flood the Federal Register.

A glance at this daily publication reveals a staggering array of agencies, departments, and commissions uttering a cacophony of bureaucratic demands.

American Exceptionalism

Henry David Thoreau famously stated, “That government is best which governs least,” and by that definition, the current state of government as presented in the Federal Register is a remarkable critique—they seek to govern all aspects of life.

Yet, amidst the chaos, there’s an undeniable charm to our contemporary government. While one might criticize Democrats and Republicans alike, we can’t help but chuckle at the absurdities they produce. Take President Barack Obama, for instance—could there have been a more quintessential character of our times?

He stands as a poignant example of what Alexis de Tocqueville described as American exceptionalism.

However, the complexities aren’t limited to the federal level; some state and local governments can be even more perplexing. In Maryland, for example, residents find themselves taxed when it rains on their properties.

We’re not here to wallow in America’s folly, though. Despite a financially strained government, misguided leaders, and a populace increasingly inclined towards mediocrity, America remains a land where opportunity flourishes and eccentricity is celebrated. Here at the Economic Prism, we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Independence Day Hootenanny

Despite relentless efforts by reformers to restrict freedoms, some individuals persist beyond the reach of their nets. In the lesser-known corners of the Republic, the nostalgic sounds of Saturday night hootenannies echo beneath ancient oak trees. Defying convention, free-spirited folks gather under the moonlight, dancing to zydeco rhythms, all while enjoying homemade spirits.

These gatherings affirm that, even today, there exist pockets of liberty in the lower 48 states where joy abounds and children can enjoy cupcakes in school without fear of retribution.

These uniquely exceptional locations share a rhythm, characterized by clean air, pure drinking water, and empowered residents.

Here in our slice of Americana lies the terminus of Western civilization’s manifest destiny. At the Port of Long Beach, a stunning collision of concrete and steel meets the Pacific Ocean, symbolizing a dynamic balance of cultures. East and West converge amidst the bustling activity of China Shipping vessels laden with goods.

Just east of the Los Angeles River, where urban runoff from over 10 million people spills into San Pedro Bay, there’s a marina park and inviting boardwalk. Defying pessimistic forecasts, the weather is perfect—mid-70s with a gentle breeze. Expect a delightfully odd assortment of individuals to gather by the shore for a quintessential beach party, a sort of Independence Day Hootenanny.

Few attendees might reflect on the notions of freedom and independence; however, who could begrudge a holiday that allows for festivity, indulgence, and fireworks? This day, much like many aspects of modern American life, evokes nostalgia for a time gone by.

Let us celebrate it with fervor!

Sincerely,
