The day started with a solemn celebration in the Saint Michael and Saint Gudula Cathedral for Saint Arnold, the patron saint of brewers, followed by an academic session at the Brussels City Hall.
Lorin Parys, president of the Belgian Brewers, addressed concerns regarding a recent open letter opposing the upcoming slogan “Alcohol damages health” in alcohol advertising. Parys acknowledged the mix of support and criticism received, emphasizing the importance of a balanced debate on the new regulations. He expressed a desire for dialogue with the government to address unanswered questions about the proposals.
During the event, Lodovico Folin-Calabi from the UNESCO Liaison Office highlighted that UNESCO’s recognition was for beer culture—not just the beverage itself. He noted that this culture includes knowledge, traditions, and social customs.
The Belgian Beer Weekend continues through Sunday at the Grote Markt, where visitors can try over 500 beers, including more than fifty alcohol-free options. Last year attracted over 70,000 attendees.
Additionally, the Beursplein will host the Belgian Beer Culture Bar until Sunday, featuring daily themes on brewing and gastronomy. Throughout the country, Belgian beer will be celebrated in cafés and supermarkets, culminating in a beer festival in Bruges on September 12 and 13.
