Judge halts deportation of Oscar Belgal following ICE shooting incident.

A federal judge has temporarily stopped the deportation of Oscar Belgal, a 28-year-old undocumented immigrant who was shot by an ICE agent in Manhattan while his 5-year-old son was in the car. Belgal, who has a history of legal issues, was trying to be detained when the shooting occurred. Although he sustained a neck injury and still has a bullet lodged in his body, his son was unharmed. Advocates filed a petition to block his deportation, emphasizing that firing on a father in such a situation is unlawful.

Following the incident, Belgal was taken into custody by ICE and subsequently transported to a federal detention center. The ICE agent involved stated that they feared for their lives during the encounter, as they claimed Belgal had accelerated his vehicle towards them after fleeing from a previous attempted detainment.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul criticized ICE’s actions, calling for a halt to their operations in the state and highlighting that other law enforcement agencies do not operate with such reckless disregard for public safety. The situation continues to raise significant questions about the use of force in immigration enforcement.
