Honda Xcelerator Supports Developer of Rare-Earth-Free Magnets

Honda is placing a strategic investment in Niron Magnetics, which is pioneering Iron Nitride permanent magnet technology. This innovation aims to replace conventional rare-earth magnets often used in electric motors, thus reducing reliance on limited and geographically concentrated rare earth supply chains.

Niron’s Iron Nitride technology has the potential to benefit various sectors such as automotive, robotics, and industrial automation. This partnership entails collaborative efforts to develop motor designs that leverage the unique magnetic properties of Iron Nitride.

As the demand for electric vehicle (EV) drive motors continues to rise, the concern over the availability of rare earth materials has become increasingly significant for manufacturers. Honda’s investment is aligned with its long-term objectives of electrification and sustainability, signaling a shift towards more resilient and diversified supply chains in the electric vehicle industry.
