Xcel Energy is launching a transparency initiative in the Texas Panhandle to address customer concerns regarding the costs associated with new energy infrastructure, especially as demand from large data centers increases. The initiative, called “Our Energy Pledge,” includes a website designed to inform the public about how the company is managing energy prices while safeguarding consumer interests.
Justin Smiley, strategic planning director at SPS Regulatory, explained that the initiative aims to clarify how costs related to major new users, such as data centers, will be managed. Smiley noted that these large loads require specific processes, including filing a large load tariff and coordinating with the Southwest Power Pool to ensure grid reliability.
Currently, no data centers in the Panhandle are connected to Xcel’s grid; they are linked to ERCOT instead. The initiative comes at a time when Xcel is facing significant growth not just from data centers but also from agricultural, oil and gas expansion, and the need to upgrade aging infrastructure.
The goal is to improve planning and preparation for managing these demands without compromising service reliability for residential customers.
