Tornado in Sicily Topples Cars and Causes Significant Damage to School in Marsala

A powerful tornado struck Marsala, a city in western Sicily, on Friday, causing significant damage, overturning vehicles, and injuring at least two people. The tornado led to destruction in surrounding areas, including Petrosino and Mazara del Vallo, and left debris scattered across the city.

Dramatic footage showed strong winds wreaking havoc, with scenes of blown-out windows and a partially collapsed ceiling in a local school. Utility poles were downed, and reports indicated damage to multiple houses and businesses. Salvatore Cocina, head of Sicily’s Civil Protection agency, described the tornado’s intensity as “almost like an American tornado,” noting the unprecedented violence it brought.

In the wake of the disaster, local officials are seeking funding for repairs, particularly for the damaged school. They highlighted that the extreme weather events occurring in recent years may be exacerbated by the climate crisis.

This tornado marks another dangerous incident for Sicily, which has faced various challenges, including a tourist stranded due to volcanic activity from Mount Etna earlier this year.
