Overcooked tore you apart, and Stage Fright is here to help you heal.

Stage Fright: A Cooperative Adventure from Ghost Town Games

A New Direction After Overcooked

After introducing Overcooked to friends in 2016 and experiencing its relationship-testing chaos, it’s fascinating to see Ghost Town Games pivot to a new cooperative game, Stage Fright. This game aims to foster collaboration rather than conflict. Instead of the infamous “Divorce Kitchen” experience, Stage Fright focuses on building relationships through gameplay.

Developer Insights

Co-director Oliver De-Vine emphasized this tonal shift, stating, “Overcooked broke you apart and Stage Fright is there to put you back together.” The developers aim to create a positive co-op experience centered on communication rather than controller mastery. They noted that the best players are those who can communicate effectively, as shown in early demonstrations where chatty pairs outperformed silent groups.

Couch Co-op Vibes, Even Online

Stage Fright aims to replicate the local co-op experience, even for online players. It incorporates splitscreen gameplay to enhance communication and connection, allowing players to “nudge” each other toward solutions, mimicking the physical companionship of couch co-op.

Gameplay Dynamics

In Stage Fright, two players guide kids through puzzles in a setting reminiscent of Luigi’s Mansion. The game maintains accessibility with its single-button action while increasing complexity in solving mysteries and avoiding threats. Players are encouraged to communicate verbally, with a focus on tangible items rather than inventory management.

De-Vine highlighted the game’s structure: “It’s linear in a way that is similar to Silent Hill,” which might seem an unusual comparison but emphasizes thematic depth without inventory clutter.
