Organization Leverages Gov. Pillen Contract Debate to Initiate Business Grant Initiative

As early voting begins in Nebraska, controversy surrounds a government contract linked to Governor Jim Pillen. A group called Nebraskans for Accountability and Honesty has initiated a “No Bid Contract” giveaway, offering ten $5,000 grants to local business owners. This initiative aims to spotlight a $2.5 million state contract awarded to a lobbyist with connections to Pillen, which bypassed competitive bidding under claims of an emergency.

Critics, including State Auditor Mike Foley, have raised concerns over this contract, pointing out that the justification for its emergency status was left blank in the paperwork, suggesting potential favoritism.

Pillen defended the contract, asserting that it complied fully with the law and resulted in significant federal funding for the state. However, the arrangement is still being investigated by the Lincoln Police Department.

Nebraskans for Accountability and Honesty hopes to maintain focus on the issue as voters head to the polls, emphasizing both the need to address perceptions of waste in state governance and to support local businesses struggling with rising costs and property taxes. Grant applications are open until the end of October, with potential extensions.
