Struggles for Kauai Businesses Post-Hurricane Lowell
Kauai, Hawaii — Nearly a month after Hurricane Lowell wreaked havoc across Kauai, local businesses are facing immense challenges as they await financial assistance to recover.
The Ongoing Battle for Aid
Will Lydgate, a farmer in Kapa’a, highlights the dire situation, stating, “We need hundreds of thousands to repair the damage. People are really struggling right now.” Although federal major disaster aid has been approved for certain organizations, ongoing assistance specifically for local businesses and individuals remains unannounced.
Joseph Burns, state director for the Hawaii Small Business Development Center, explains that current federal aid is earmarked for nonprofits providing non-critical services like libraries and community centers, leaving many businesses in limbo. He emphasizes, “The assistance for individuals and for businesses is not yet available,” with hopes for an announcement soon.
Impact on Local Businesses
The delay in aid is particularly concerning for those already hanging by a thread. Lydgate expresses doubt regarding the survival of some farms: “A lot of farms got really worked… It’s pretty hard to comprehend.” Business closures could be imminent as revenue continues to dwindle.
A disaster declaration could unlock critical loans needed for recovery. Burns states, “When your business is about to close down because your revenue has been shut off, that’s a pretty serious situation.”
In addition, the state’s Kauai Hurricane Lowell Business Recovery grant program, initially set to open on September 30, is now delayed until October 14, adding to the anxiety of local entrepreneurs.
The Wait for Relief
With each passing day, losses continue to mount. Lydgate recounts the initial relief at the approval of disaster assistance, only to be met with the realization that the aid isn’t yet accessible. “It’s okay. Hurry up and wait a little while longer,” he lamented, noting that for some, the wait might come too late.
