Bellaire’s Enchanted Woods Nature Play Space Groundbreaking
Bellaire officials are embarking on an exciting redevelopment at the northwest corner of Evergreen Street and Newcastle Drive. On October 7, they celebrated the groundbreaking of the Nature Discovery Center’s Enchanted Woods Nature Play Space and Cottage Classroom. This project aims to transform Russ Pitman Park’s existing play area into a vibrant, research-informed landscape that encourages children to explore the natural world through climbing, digging, splashing, and building.
The Celebration
The groundbreaking marked a key milestone in the nonprofit’s mission to broaden access to environmental education in the Houston area. Mayor Gus Pappas, along with city council members and Nature Discovery Center (NDC) board members, attended the ceremony, which involved unveiling official project renderings and discussing naming and donation opportunities.
During the event, Executive Director Meredith Wheeler shared the vision of creating an immersive outdoor environment for children, stating, “Enchanted Woods began as a dream to create an immersive outdoor environment where children could learn through exploration, imagination, and hands-on discovery.”
Notable Quotes
Mayor Pappas emphasized the center’s appeal to families, saying, “They come here because of the Nature Discovery Center. It is a great place to work, live, and raise a family.” He anticipates the joy and educational opportunities that the new space will provide for children.
