La Casa de Mama Bodega: A Cultural Hub in Buffalo’s East Side
As Hispanic Heritage Month concludes, La Casa de Mama Bodega, located at 975 Broadway in Buffalo, aims to celebrate culture and community year-round. Established in May by Suheiri Rodriguez, the bodega is more than just a grocery store; it’s designed to be a welcoming space for locals to connect over food and heritage, particularly Dominican and Puerto Rican cultures.
Rodriguez envisions the bodega as a home-like environment where everyone is welcome, stating, “You are going to go to mom’s house, your grandma’s house. This is the place that you can go to where you can eat, whether you have a dollar or not.” The menu features traditional foods like pastelitos and quesitos, alongside toys, candies, and space for playing dominoes, all fostering community spirit.
In recognition of her efforts, Rodriguez was featured in the fall edition of Latinas Evolving magazine, showcasing local Latino stories. Tayrin Tapia, the magazine’s founder, emphasized the importance of representation and building connections within the community.
As Hispanic Heritage Month wraps up, Tapia encourages ongoing celebration of Latino culture, stating, “Although we are highlighted for such a short period of time, we don’t go away the rest of the 11 months.”
Through its mission, La Casa de Mama Bodega continues to promote cultural pride and unity in Buffalo, inviting everyone to share in the celebration of community and heritage.
