Behind the Scenes of RiffTrax: The Experiments of Mystery Science Theater 3000

“Mystery Science Theater 3000: The RiffTrax Experiments” – A Behind-the-Scenes Look

In Minneapolis, the beloved cult show “Mystery Science Theater 3000” (MST3K) is back, this time reuniting with the RiffTrax team to roast gloriously bad movies. Fans funded the latest revival through a successful Kickstarter, raising $2.7 million.

Originally airing from 1988 to 1999, MST3K featured a man in a blue jumpsuit and his robot sidekicks critiquing obscure films. The show’s creator, Joel Hodgson, briefly revived it on Netflix before selling his stake, allowing the RiffTrax crew—Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett—to join for new episodes.

Recent filming took place at Cinequipt in Minneapolis, bringing back many original crew members and ex-cast like Trace Beaulieu and Frank Conniff. The handmade charm of props and puppets adds to the nostalgic feel. As cast members riff on movies, meticulous timing ensures jokes land perfectly.

The revival touches on past influences and ongoing comic relationships, highlighting how MST3K’s legacy continues to resonate with new generations. While the first episode is now available, the rest will debut soon, promising more laughs at terrible cinema.
