Avon’s Talcott Mountain Science Center secures $1.7 million NASA funding for improvements to planetarium and observatory

Talcott Mountain Science Center in Avon has been awarded a $1.7 million federal grant from NASA to upgrade facilities, including a new data science lab, a state-of-the-art planetarium, and a research-grade telescope. This funding, secured by U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes and U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, aims to enhance students’ scientific learning experiences.

The project will replace the outdated planetarium projector with a full-dome digital system and immersive audio, showcasing data from NASA missions like the Hubble and James Webb telescopes. The new telescope will be remotely operable, allowing students across Connecticut to engage in research projects, such as asteroid tracking and exoplanet observations, from their classrooms.

The initiative also includes a new computational astrophysics lab to support a certificate program in data science. Expected to serve over 15,000 K-12 students annually through field trips, the center aims to provide hands-on learning and access to real scientific data. Celebrating 60 years in 2027, the center emphasizes direct engagement with science to foster educational growth.
