NASA Administrator Highlights Alaska’s Role in Space Exploration
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTUU/KTVF) – Alaska is set to enhance its involvement in the U.S. lunar return and commercial space growth, according to federal and state leaders at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
During a talk at Schaible Auditorium, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman emphasized Alaska’s unique aerospace advantages, specifically citing the Poker Flat Research Range and the Pacific Spaceport Complex on Kodiak Island.
Dr. Russell Vander Lugt, UAF’s Chancellor, remarked on the lack of interference at Poker Flat, stating, “Ranges in the Lower 48 are crowded. Here, we have Poker Flat. It’s ours, and we use it all the time without interference under the aurora.” Vander Lugt also highlighted that UAF students are contributing to crucial research, with NASA payloads launching from Poker Flat this month.
U.S. Rep. Nick Begich encouraged students to view UAF as a gateway to advancing Alaska’s tech future, noting that significant work on technological challenges can occur without leaving the state. He urged students to engage directly with UAF’s labs and initiatives related to space exploration.
Isaacman noted the increasing demand for launches, estimating that the nation could need up to 1,000 orbital launches annually by 2030. He stressed the importance of Alaska’s geography and university talent in meeting this demand, stating, “There’s no way it’s going to happen without the contributions of Kodiak Island and other launch complexes.”
Finally, Isaacman declared that UAF students will play a critical role in supporting future lunar missions and the Artemis program, emphasizing the necessity for university students to engage with hardware that will eventually reach the moon.
Following the event, Isaacman attended a Republican rally at Fairbanks International Airport.
