Charter Space Secures $5 Million to Launch Space Insurance Services

Charter Space Secures $5 Million Seed Funding for Space Insurance Business

Charter Space, a finalist from last year’s TechCrunch Startup Battlefield, has raised $5 million in a seed funding round to expand its space insurance operations. Founded in El Segundo, California, Charter Space is currently supporting over 50 companies in the U.S. space and defense sectors since launching its nationally licensed insurance brokerage in May.

The funding round was led by Crystal Venture Partners, alongside contributors such as fintech investors QED and Blank Ventures, early-stage firm Hustle Fund, and Gaingels, an investment group focused on startups with underrepresented leadership.

CEO Yuk Chi Chan, who co-founded Charter Space with Yukun Yin, noted the industry struggles with insuring space ventures due to high underwriting costs. They initially aimed to create centralized software for aerospace engineering but identified a significant opportunity in integrating this data into the insurance process.

Chan emphasized the importance of increasing insurance coverage for satellites, as it not only enhances safety in the space industrial base but also attracts diverse investment sources beyond traditional venture capital.

The rise of new space companies, fueled by decreased launch costs from companies like SpaceX, has created a larger market for services like those provided by Charter Space. The current landscape of the space economy is characterized by rapid growth and increasing complexity in risk management.

Jonathan Crystal, managing partner at Crystal Venture Partners, highlighted the essential role of insurance in scaling the space economy sustainably. Florida’s insurance regulation commissioner, Michael Yaworsky, echoed this sentiment, stating that effective insurance is crucial for growth in the space sector and local investment.

With a total of $8 million raised to date, Charter Space plans to utilize the new funds to expand its sales and enhance its insurance offerings, including coverage for innovative initiatives like space-based nuclear power and lunar missions.
