Fort Smith Board Members Sidestep Inquiries Regarding Flock Cameras

The debate over the use of automatic license plate reader (ALPR) cameras, particularly the Flock cameras, is intensifying in Fort Smith, Arkansas. City Director Neal Martin has expressed his opposition to these systems, noting that he was the only dissenting vote regarding their implementation. Recently, the Fayetteville City Council voted to ban ALPR cameras, reflecting a trend among other Arkansas cities like Centerton and Farmington, which have terminated their contracts with Flock Safety due to concerns about mass surveillance and data privacy.

The Fort Smith Police Department currently employs 44 cameras integrated with the Flock system, but its evaluation has led to policy changes, including reducing data retention from 30 days to 7 days and limiting data access to serious investigations. Police Chief Danny Baker acknowledges the public safety benefits of ALPR technology while recognizing community concerns about privacy.

The Fort Smith city board will eventually decide the fate of these cameras, with varied opinions evident among its members, as most have not publicly commented on the issue.
