Exclusive: Kapta Space Secures $24M in Series A Funding to Develop Moving Target Radar System

Kapta Space Secures $24M Series A Funding

Overview

Kapta Space, a Seattle-based startup specializing in next-generation radar payloads for tracking moving targets, has announced a successful $24 million Series A funding round, raising its total capital to $30 million since its inception in 2022.

Investors

The funding round was co-led by Washington Harbour Partners and Bison Ventures, with participation from MetaVC Partners, MYDA Advisors, Entrada Ventures, Aurelia Foundry, and Fitz Gate Ventures.

Funding Utilization

The capital will be utilized to produce Kapta’s low-cost moving target indication (MTI) radar payloads, specifically aimed at classified missions that the company has secured this year. CEO Milton Perque mentioned that the company is engaged in two high-profile demonstration missions that aim to proliferate MTI capabilities in the near future, with results expected in 24 to 36 months.

Innovation and Capability

Kapta’s radar technology features a novel electronic steering design that enables wide-area coverage while effectively tracking moving targets across land, air, and sea. This technology is developed to be more cost-efficient, energy-efficient, and simpler compared to existing active electronically scanned arrays.

Notably, Kapta’s radar is also capable of tracking missiles during the mid-course phase, which has typically been challenging for ground-based radar systems. Furthermore, the radar’s modular design allows for a scaled-down version that could be applicable for satellite operators requiring simpler radar technology.

Future Vision

Perque emphasized that Kapta’s approach transcends existing government capabilities, addressing challenges that have historically made space-based radar systems prohibitively expensive. He expressed confidence in their proprietary architecture, aimed at reducing costs and enhancing scalability in spaceborne radar applications.
