KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 9 — Starting in 2027, tickets for local films and theater performances in the Federal Territories will be completely exempt from entertainment duty. This initiative is part of the government’s strategy to bolster the local creative industry.
According to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, more than RM130 million will be allocated to support the film, music, and creative content sectors. This funding aims to enhance Malaysia’s international image, generate job opportunities, and promote local narratives on a global scale as he outlined in Budget 2027 presented at the Dewan Rakyat.
The budget includes incentives for both local and international film and animation productions that take place in Malaysia, along with additional perks for works that highlight Malaysian culture and national identity.
Furthermore, the government plans to enhance the local animation sector by developing 20 new intellectual properties (IPs) and commercializing Malaysian characters worldwide. State administrations are also encouraged to adopt similar measures to support local creative professionals.
