With airfare rising 23.4% this year, I’m enjoying my preferred travel method even more.

Before I transitioned to travel writing, I worked at CNBC. Recently, I observed a report from my former colleagues indicating a significant rise in travel costs, particularly airfare, which has increased by 23.4% compared to last year according to the latest consumer price index.

Various factors contribute to this surge in prices. Disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have impacted oil prices significantly, leading to increased costs for jet fuel. This has forced airlines to reduce their capacity while demand for travel remains high, resulting in a perfect storm for higher ticket prices.

For many travelers, flying is essential—especially for oceanic travel. However, I believe that many overlook train travel, specifically Amtrak, which serves vast regions across the U.S. I’ve been an Amtrak enthusiast since my first ride in 2012, enjoying various routes across the country.

Recently, I traveled by train to Raleigh for a wedding, and I planned another trip to Roanoke. The cost for my ticket was reasonable, and while Amtrak has its quirks—like delays due to construction—it often presents an appealing alternative to flying, especially for shorter routes.

Amtrak operates in 46 states excluding South Dakota and Wyoming, covering more than 21,000 miles of track with around 300 trains daily. With a record 34.5 million passengers transported in fiscal year 2025, it’s clear that Amtrak remains a vital service.

I appreciate train travel for its unique advantages. For instance, I can work during the journey thanks to onboard Wi-Fi, significantly reducing travel time by allowing me to log in from my seat instead of taking time off work. Additionally, Amtrak’s baggage allowance makes it easier to transport gifts, leftovers, and purchases without the limitations imposed by airlines.

Ultimately, while air travel has its place, I contend that train travel can offer a more enjoyable and practical solution for many trips, allowing for comfort and scenic views—especially valuable during a time when airfare is soaring.
