US astronaut Sian Proctor emphasizes that space exploration transcends mere destination achievement—it’s about enhancing sustainability on Earth. Speaking at the 77th International Astronautical Congress in Antalya, Proctor, known for piloting SpaceX’s Inspiration4 mission, shared how viewing Earth from orbit shifted her perspective.
One profound moment for Proctor was witnessing “Earthlight,” the planet’s unique light signature, underscoring the interconnectedness of life on Earth. She highlighted that future lunar and Mars missions will necessitate innovative management of food, water, energy, and waste, with solutions applicable to Earth’s challenges.
“We go to space for here, for Earth,” Proctor stated, advocating that space solutions can alleviate terrestrial issues. She also encouraged aspiring astronauts to explore their individual talents and passions to inspire themselves and others. Proctor praised Türkiye’s role in uniting global space experts, noting its strategic geographic position as a facilitator for collaboration in the field of space exploration.
