The Moon Conceals Jupiter in Stunning Images of October’s Lunar Occultation

On October 6, millions watched as Jupiter disappeared from the night sky, obscured by a crescent moon in a celestial event called a lunar occultation. This spectacle was visible across North America, Western Africa, and the Atlantic Ocean. While many observers saw the moon just a few degrees from Jupiter, others experienced the full occultation where the moon passed directly in front of the gas giant.

Numerous astrophotographers captured stunning images of this event. Photographer Peter Zay, who took photos over North Carolina, described the challenges in balancing the brightness of the moon and Jupiter’s moons. He successfully captured images of both the moon’s craters and Jupiter’s four major moons.

Many others, like Josh McCollum in Pennsylvania, also documented the event using telescopes, while enthusiasts across various locations shared their experiences and photographs on social media, highlighting the excitement surrounding this astronomical phenomenon.
