From Earth to Space: 2026 Coins Launched into Orbit After Being Out of Circulation for a Month

U.S. Mint Celebrates Semiquincentennial with Space-Flown Coins

October 7, 2026 — The United States Mint has launched the 2026 coin sets, commemorating the nation’s 250th anniversary of independence. This collection is unique as it includes coins that were sent to the International Space Station (ISS) earlier this year.

The annual set features ten coins, eight of which were launched into low Earth orbit by NASA aboard a SpaceX Dragon capsule in May. The included denominations are a Jefferson nickel, an “Emerging Liberty” dime, an “Enduring Liberty” half dollar, and five themed quarters highlighting significant historical documents like the Mayflower Compact and the Gettysburg Address.

These eight coins are dual-dated 1776 to 2026, acknowledging the semiquincentennial landmark. The Lincoln penny and Sacagawea dollar did not make the space journey but are also part of the proof set available for sale.

In July, the Mint promoted the coins with images taken in microgravity, emphasizing their extraordinary journey. The coins were off-planet for over 32 days before safely returning to Earth on June 17.

Mint officials, including Director Paul Hollis, expressed excitement about the coins’ unique history. However, details regarding their future use remain unspecified. While the semiquincentennial designs will soon be retired, the Roosevelt dime and Kennedy half dollar will return into circulation, with new designs introduced in 2027.

This mission marks a rare occasion for American currency to be launched into space, with past instances of coins being sent primarily under controlled conditions. Following past controversies surrounding astronauts taking personal items into space, NASA has regulated such practices since 1972 to prevent potential exploitation of memorabilia.

The flight of these eight coins to the ISS adds a notable chapter to the history of U.S. coins, showcasing the intersection of heritage, space exploration, and the celebration of a monumental anniversary.
