Fire Leaves Businesses on Broughton Street Battling to Recover
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – A recent fire on Broughton Street has significantly impacted several local businesses, prompting a major recovery effort.
Firefighters responded to the blaze shortly after 3 a.m. last Thursday, striving to control the flames that spread through the historic buildings. The building, which includes shops from Levy Jewelers to Broughton Liquor, still carries the lingering smell of smoke.
Catherine Garrido, owner of Milan Day Spa, described the aftermath: “It looked like a horror movie in there.”
Challenges in Firefighting
Greg Jacobs, a battalion chief with the Savannah Fire Department, noted the challenges posed by the area’s historic architecture. “These buildings are old and have been modified over time, making them both durable and a concern during emergencies.”
Assessing the Damage
While Broughton Liquor managed to escape damage and has already reopened, Milan Day Spa suffered a total loss, closing after 16 years in the historic district. “Unless you’ve gone through this loss, it’s hard to express how it feels,” Garrido remarked.
Two restaurants in the area, Naan on Broughton and Estia Kitchen, remain closed. Naan has announced plans to reopen soon, while Estia Kitchen has yet to set a date.
In contrast, Levy Jewelers reopened quickly, having protected its merchandise effectively against the fire.
Milan Day Spa’s Temporary Relocation
The 12 employees of Milan Day Spa have temporarily relocated to Spa Bliss, which is about half a mile away. “We are still in shock but determined to rebuild and come back bigger and better,” Garrido concluded.
