Several Businesses in Ocala’s Paddock Market Ordered to Close Due to Unlicensed Activity
OCALA, Fla. (WCJB) — Multiple businesses within Ocala’s Paddock Market have been shut down following orders for unlicensed operations. One of the affected owners, John Castle of Colombian Bakery, expressed his frustration, explaining that the issue stemmed from the space provided by the market rather than his business itself.
Since January, the Paddock Market has been repurposing the former Sears building to host various small businesses, vendors, and eateries. Recently, five businesses, including Mojito Ice Bar and Black Maki, were closed by the state Department of Business and Professional Regulation after inspections revealed non-compliance issues, particularly regarding water and sewer connections.
Castle, who sells coffee, pastries, and Colombian bread, stated that he believed the market was responsible for ensuring appropriate facilities were available. He has been attempting to secure the necessary permits for eight months but was informed only recently that his stall’s setup was not suitable for food service.
Despite his closure, Castle was asked to pay rent for another month, a request he deemed unreasonable. Other businesses in the market appear to have the necessary infrastructure, but Castle feels the closed vendors faced difficulties due to inadequate space.
