100th Adoption Celebration at WSWHE BOCES Small Animal Science Program
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — The Small Animal Science Program at WSWHE BOCES achieved a significant milestone by facilitating its 100th adoption of a local homeless pet.
Launched in 2022, this innovative program provides high school juniors and seniors hands-on experience in animal care while positively impacting the community. Students foster animals in their classrooms through collaborations with local shelters and rescue organizations, including the Saratoga County Animal Shelter, H.O.P.E., and Hop on Home Rabbit Sanctuary.
The milestone adoption was celebrated with Gary, a homeless kitten who became the 100th animal to find a loving home. For instructor Carter Stevens, this achievement holds deeper significance.
“Our goal is not only to educate our students but also to help address the local pet overpopulation problem,” Stevens stated. “We are so proud to lend a hand to our local shelters and help homeless animals find the loving homes they deserve.”
Through their engagement with the animals, students gain valuable lessons in responsibility, compassion, animal health, and welfare, while actively contributing to the transition of animals from shelters to permanent homes.
Reaching 100 adoptions is a remarkable feat for a program that has been operational for just a few years. For Stevens and the students, each adoption symbolizes more than just a number; it represents a second chance for an animal and an opportunity for students to learn the true value of compassion through practical experience.
