The City of McAllen, Texas, is ramping up its economic diplomacy initiatives after a positive business engagement in Tampico, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Approximately 25 prospective business owners expressed interest in the city’s Soft-Landing Program, designed to aid international businesses in establishing operations in the U.S.
During an event in Tampico on September 9, titled “¿Cómo hacer Negocios en McAllen?”, McAllen’s Director of International Relations, Daniella Plata, shared key insights on business requirements and resources available for entering the U.S. market. The event attracted around 500 attendees from 20 cities across six states, highlighting a significant interest in expanding opportunities, particularly in the food and beverage industry.
Notable businesses exploring U.S. expansion include a successful restaurant from Tampico and a prosthetics startup in the incubation stage. The outreach generated considerable media coverage in Mexico and has led to McAllen being invited to speak at the National Association of Franchises’ convention in Guadalajara in late October.
McAllen has already assisted 79 entrepreneurs from the Tampico area in expanding their ventures this year. According to City Manager Isaac J. Tawil, the interest from Tamaulipas underscores the importance of fostering international relations and connecting businesses to opportunities in McAllen.
